I don’t understand what it is trying to say, in fact. Does is say : it is a 40mph zone but you should slow down or does it say it is a 40mph and you should not go faster. Near my place in Nelson, the school zone is I think 30k.

It’s just too fast as a speed limit if children are present. It’s about 65 kmh when as you note, it should be about 30, so I’ve always thought it was a bit absurd…It’s about a 15 mph drop in speed from the normal on the country roads.

I love signs like that. There’s one near where I grew up that says « Slow, Children at Play » above a limit of 40 mph. Pretty amusing that.
