I searched in vain for the name of this tree, which I believe to be from New Zealand, but I am not sure. Anyway, when I saw a few of them in the undergrowth near the Marahau River, I could easily imagine how they could become characters of mysterious and magical legends in extraordinary stories as it would be easy to confuse them with the silhouette of a human being.
I couldn’t quite tell from the photo but it looks like it could be a juvenile rimu. A lot of NZ trees have juvenile forms quite different from the adult tree – like lancewood and rata and rimu… Anyway I could be wrong. https://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelandanita/12298604453

Wow, what a tree!
A follower from NZ is telling me it’s a young rimu. So magical!
Rimu is a new one for me!
