I would tell the water
its movements
its blues and the sand
then the shadows of the clouds
riding on its back
then the morning light
and the afternoon's
then I would start again

We will watch
in the clear water
the cloudy reflection of ourselves
which, surprisingly, will have not changed
although we had hoped that
the passage of time
would have transformed us
but we measured ourselves up
against our wounds
and we will resume hobbling
one step forward, two steps back

I will clear my head
of all the missed appointments
every spring

I would tell the water
its movements
its blues and the sand
then the shadows of clouds
riding on its back
then the morning light
and the afternoon's
then I would start again
