After a shaky start to the summer, the fine weather has settled in since the beginning of February. With climate change and La Niña contributing, the sea temperature of twenty degrees and above is still too high for me, and even though the children are back at school and the beach is quieter, I do not feel like going there. I go to the Matai River, at a place called « Dennes Hole, » where the water temperature is between fourteen and sixteen degrees in the morning. I go there first thing to enjoy the cooler water, which depends on the night’s temperature and warms up quickly. This is the view I have while dipping into the water in the silence of the morning, as the sun filters through the leaves.
that hour of the morning
when the possibilities are parading
in the waves of awakening
and the wrinkles in the coffee
sometimes superhuman
at some other times, fragile
before fading in the sun
or hanging around in town

I would question the uncertain morning, its color, its flavor, what is the best height to drop? I would let myself go, perhaps, in the blur of the evening.
